A young Black mother from Aurora, Colorado, was targeted by child protective services in 2017 and forced to plead guilty to endangering her child, despite no evidence. The Family Advocacy Unit at Community Legal Services helps parents involved with the child welfare system maintain custody or reunite with their children. The unit's Managing Attorney, Ms. Creamer, has been advocating for incarcerated parents and their families. She also led the coalition that successfully passed the 2010 legislation. Dr. Smith, an assistant professor of sociology at UC Irvine, studies state intervention into motherhood and families.
