Nargis, 16, studies on her laptop at home, unable to continue her secondary education in Afghanistan She thinks of her friend Rabia, who was top of the class. “Brilliant, motivated and full of energy”, Rabia works hard and helps others with their schoolwork. But her family don’t have the means to support her education elsewhere.
Her students had dreams of going to top universities around the world, like Harvard and Stanford. Over time, Safia says they became not teacher and students, but friends. They are still in touch over WhatsApp, and the girls ask her regularly when they will be able to return to the classroom, and if not, what their lives will be like.
