EXCLUSIVE: The trainee doctors had been offered the chance to study in Scotland but Westminster has not opened up a route for them to come.
Twenty female medical students in Afghanistan have been left "suicidal" because the UK Government has not allowed them to come to Scotland.
The UK Government had initially said that the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme would re-open in January to allow the women to come to study at Glasgow, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Aberdeen or Dundee. The date was then pushed back until August.SNP MP Owen Thompson has accused the UK Government of "moral bankruptcy" because it has "ignored" the women.Thompson said: “This situation is a complete disgrace.
“This is the UK Government’s moral bankruptcy – a direct failure to help some of the world’s most vulnerable women.” No progress has been made over the women coming to Scotland, despite discussions with both the UK and Scottish Government. “We have a moral duty to the Afghan people – many of whom fought alongside British forces in the fight against the Taliban. It would be sickening if Britain was to fail in this fundamental duty. “For these female medical students, the situation is especially dangerous. They are seen as a threat to the Taliban's ideology, and they are at risk of being targeted for violence or arrest.
