Carlton star Sam Docherty has revealed he underwent surgery for a benign testicular tumour in December 2022. 7NEWS

, Docherty made the surprise admission, alongside a picture of himself and baby daughter Ruby and a picture of his stomach post-surgery.“I think it’s important to continue to tell my story as a part of that. Part of my journey consists of a routine check up with my doctors which include regular scans and blood tests.“In December last year my routine check up showed a benign tumor that needed to be removed surgically.

“It’s a timely reminder that if you are due to see your doctor or if anything doesn’t feel right with your health, please go get checked.”The defender was first diagnosed with testicular cancer in November 2020. In August 2021, just nine months later, the then Carlton co-captain revealed he would be undergoing chemotherapy for a second time after the return of the disease.“It’s hard to know the right way to share this,” the Instagram post began.“In doing so, I hope to allow the narrative to run as it is intended. With purpose and to minimise speculation.

“Unfortunately life has thrown another curveball my way and my testicular cancer has recurred, sadly meaning that I will need to undergo a round of chemotherapy. “It’s been a really tough few days processing the news and understanding what the next few months is going to look like for me.Ben Cunnington and Sam Docherty pose with Mason Cheong at the Royal Children’s Hospital.Despite the setback, the inspirational leader remarkably didn’t miss a game in 2022 and produced one of the best seasons of his career.
