The Catholic Church still wants to eventually be allowed to operate religious schools and broadcast on state-run television and radio. “We have a long way to go,” Suarez said. Arguably the most popular religion in Cuba is Santeria, which fuses Catholicism with Afro-Caribbean traditions. Santería was born as a form of quiet resistance among Cuba’s Black communities.
