Never give up

A Lancashire man has fulfilled his longstanding dream of snowboarding down Yr Wyddfa - the mountain formerly known as Snowdon.

"The snow was unbelievable. It was really deep. We went up the Miners' Track and at the top we met a Swiss instructor. He had a snowboard on his back and, as we parted ways, he snowboarded down and we followed his path all the way."It was just unbelievable. I didn't even snowboard then but I wanted to experience that and it's been in my mind ever since."

"In 2015, she dragged me along to learn to snowboard," he said. Winter sports have become a huge part of their relationship, so much so that John proposed in Les Arcs ski resort back in 2018, and the couple got married in the nearby resort of Peisey Vallandry. "I've never been up in conditions where it's good enough to do anything," he said. "It doesn't get enough snow and if it does, it's often when I'm in work or I'm not able to get there." While people have been known to ski down Yr Wyddfa, it isn't particularly known to be a skiers' mountain - its ruggedness and coastal location means it doesn't hold much snow for very long. But that wasn't about to stop John.
