Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft was originally expected to be fully operational in 2015.
Boeing has repeatedly cited crew safety for its delays. However, the company has also faced heavy criticism for its airliner safety protocols in recent months and years.
NASA selected two companies to foster competition. Back in 2010, SpaceX and Boeing were two completely different propositions. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 flew for the very first time that year, while Boeing had a historic track record of developing technologies for NASA’s Apollo program, the Space Shuttle, and the ISS.
Boeing’s Starliner program, meanwhile, has been marred by cost overruns, launch aborts, and mission delays. Separately, the aerospace giant’s reputation has suffered following two 737 MAX 8 airliner crashes in 2018 and 2019.have come forward and heavily criticized Boeing’s safety practices and their internal reactions to complaints. One of those, John Barnett, suddenly died before he was set to testify.
It has a disposable service module for power and propulsion as well as 20 Orbital Maneuvering and Attitude Control engines that produce up to 1,400 lb of thrust. The crew capsule also features 28 Reaction Control System engines.
