One mistake, and a legacy is ruined.
In what read more like a scolding of ingrates than an embrace of colleagues, President Biden sent a fiery missive to congressional Democrats Monday --that was an enumeration of his accomplishments, punctuated by numerous claims that he is the best candidate to prevent Donald Trump from regaining the White House.
One exchange was particularly troubling, after George Stephanopoulos asked how he would feel if he lost the election and the country had to endure another Trump term because of his electoral miscalculation. And while the debate may not have registered profoundly in the national data, the polls from swing states -- where voters are paying attention – show that Biden is doing tangibly worse.
Today, he can go down in history as the man who saved America from Trump twice - first by running four years ago, then by passing the torch.“What we need right now – and what I think takes a spine – is to step aside and recognize the president of the United States doesn’t have the vigor necessary to overcome the deficit here and it’s going to affect us all,” he said. “This isn’t a time for contemplation. It’s time for tough love.
What Richard Neustadt wrote a half-century ago is still true: “The power of the presidency is the power to persuade.” The Democrats need someone who can articulate a message in real time, under the hottest lights, not only when he’s on prompter or drafting memos.
