It's just a week until the 2023 Appleby Horse Fair kicks off. Many in Appleby-in-Westmorland and beyond are already excited for the event.

Almost 90 per cent of the people who took part in the survey said they felt their safety was compromised during the fair. Whilst 47 per cent of businesses stated they remained open or continued to operate, only 9% reported that they saw an increase in their income and profits, with 84 per cent stating that it reduces income or decreases profits.
"Many people think locals want to ban the fair, and whilst that for some may be true, most would be happy if it was organised in a more professional way so that their lives would be impacted as little as possible. It needs to benefit the town, currently, the majority see no benefits but see the increase in local tax to pay the costs and the negative impact on their daily lives. We have a handful of people making a significant amount of money, but the perception is all locals benefit.
"Better organisation in line with current standards would improve things drastically. Currently, residents don’t feel they are listened to which is creating a massive divide between the communities, especially when they feel they are the last priority with concerns often ignored or downplayed.
