A momentous holiday is stuck on replay in Charlotte Wells’s directorial debut
Aftersun is good for instant soothing, but even the most high-quality lotion probably won’t do too much to fix a serious sunburn. Only time will heal that. In the moment, on your hotel bed, you’re left with something very red and painful. In Charlotte Wells’s, which is out now in cinemas, the protagonist is also suffering from some scorching days in the heat, though relief, even years later, remains elusive.
Their hotel is immediately lacking: construction work interrupts the poolside peace, there’s only one bed in Calum and Sophie’s room, and good luck tracking down a concierge. Calum, an optimistic type, does his best to instil and maintain the holiday vibe. They play water polo in the hotel pool, go snorkelling, take a trip to the mud baths . Among the crowded pools and hotel lobby arcades, they find respite.
