84% of students who retook their maths GCSE this year failed again. 'Successive governments have failed to address one of education’s biggest scandals,' says academic
Lee Elliot Major, professor of social mobility at the University of Exeter, called on the Government to overhaul the current system, which he said was failing young people across the country.
“The Government will argue that because of the retake policy there’s more people than ever getting grade 4 or above in GCSE maths, and they’ve got a point,” he told“But the flipside to all this is that there’s clearly a large cohort who aren’t benefiting from this and who are having to [do] repeated retakes, who would be better off with a different qualification.
But this year’s students performed slightly better overall than 2019’s cohort, with Ofqual reiterating that it put some protections in place to cushion the blow for students facing lingering pandemic-related disruption., stamping out the grade inflation fuelled by a switch to teacher-assessed grades during the Covid crisis.
Meanwhile, Professor Alan Smithers, head of the Centre for Education and Employment Research at the University of Buckingham, said the current resit model was “misguided”.
