Airdrie will qualify as one of the best runners-up after their victory over the Doonhamers

New signing Ben Wilson struck yet again for Airdrie as they booked their place in the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup with victory over Queen of the South.

And Airdrie's haul of nine points and a goal difference of +10 will see them qualify for the knockout stages as one of the three best runners-up after finishing behind Group A winners Aberdeen. The next chance also fell to the Doonhamers and it took an oustanding save from Wright to deny them in 33 minutes. MacIntyre was again involved as he burst into the box and picked out Kieran McKechnie at the back post. The midfielder took a good touch and looked destined to burst the net, but his venomous drive from close range was batted away by Wright as he raced back across goal to keep the scores level.

Wright spread himself well at a free-kick to thwart Doohamers defender Matty Douglas from an effort on goal and, down the other end, Hogarth came up with a big save when he got down well to turn a Dean McMaster piledriver behind for a corner after 56 minutes. Airdrie now prepare to kick-off their Championship campaign next Saturday when they welcome Raith Rovers to New Broomfield.
