Robert Inglis shared his souvenirs and memories of the school in the 1940s with its current pupils
Pupils at Airdrie Academy heard its history come alive as they welcomed a distinguished former pupil as part of their year of 175th anniversary celebrations.
The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories, and allows you to customise your page to the sections that matter most to you.Robert grew up in Clarkston and spent six years at Airdrie Academy and showed the current pupils his senior leaving certificate from 1946, signed by headmaster RA Sinclair and showing completion of courses in English, maths, arithmetic, Latin, geography, chemistry, physics and dynamics.
He is the oldest participant in the school’s Year 175: Voices from the Academy anniversary project – and its leader, English teacher Gail Crosbie, called him “a unique and very special visitor an important story in our history”. Family friend Maureen Baillie, who accompanied him on the visit to meet current first-year pupils, said: “He thoroughly enjoyed his visit and was so looking forward to it; he couldn’t believe the amount of pupils now compared to when he was at school and thought the building was really big.
It moved to a new £100,000 building at South Commonhead Road during Robert’s time as a pupil, then into the current £26 million building in October 2006 – with its grounds now including a commemorative stone from the first building marking an 1887 expansion.
