Parents have slammed North Lanarkshire Council for removing the crossing patrol outside a school in Airdrie .

The council says it follows the installation of two sets of traffic signals with pelican crossings and other traffic-calming measures in the area. "This close call nightmare has become our everyday reality, and we cannot stand by as the safety of our children hangs in the balance. Prior to the removal of our crossing patrol officer, an everyday hero stood guard at our school, ensuring the safety of our little ones.Laura Green, a supporter of the petition which has so far had over 130 signatures, adds: "I am a concerned parent. This is a constant worry watching the children at the crossing and fearing the worst.

"We desperately need our crossing patrol officer back. Please NLC help us before there ends up being an accident or a fatality."
