Airports may have to close at Christmas under Border Force strike worst case scenario 🔴 Military personnel are being drafted in, along with civil servants and volunteers, to support Border Force at airports and ports affected by the strike
Bernard Lavelle, an aviation consultant, said: “Closing airports is unlikely as airports will have operational plans in place to deal with the Border Force strikes.
“If it seems as if demand may exceed supply and as a last resort, airports may cap capacity to ensure that the UK Border area is not overwhelmed. Airports can limit the number of flights per hour or, as LHR [Heathrow] has done in the past, limit the number of passengers, perhaps on an hourly basis. “If airports had to close – very unlikely – it would be a result of poor operational planning by the relevant airports. Much more likely, is delays and cancellations due to queues at border control and the knock on effects this will have on flights and of course on passengers.”
Meanwhile, Lucy Moreton, a professional officer with the ISU union – which represents around 4,000 Border Force officers who will not be taking part in the strikes – raised concerns thatShe claimed that training for 3,000 military personnel brought in to cover striking workers had been slashed to five days compared to 10 days for Home Office staff who can help support the border during an emergency.
Common errors made by replacement personnel in similar scenarios include not spotting red flags for passengers who, for example, may be in breach of deportation order and spending too much time checking passengers who were not a cause for concern.
