Australian star Ajla Tomljanović has put 18 wretched months behind her and believes she can start at the French Open on a road to discover new peaks at 31.

Tomljanović recently pulled out of a tournament in Parma to protect a stiff neck but said it was nothing to worry about. The French Open begins on Sunday night AEST with Tomljanović facing 30th seed Dayana Yastremska.

"Feeling great this week. It feels really nice to be back," the three-time grand slam quarter-finalist told AAP from Paris. But Tomljanović explained it was only a precaution to ensure she was firing for Paris, where she will be featuring in her 35th slam. "I'm not gonna lie to you, it's been really challenging. I came off my career-best year and felt I was ready to do bigger and better things," she said. After having knee surgery early last year, Ajla Tomljanović had doubts about whether she would return to professional tennis, which made her Australian Open first-round win even more significant."Then the knee came along and my other setback this year, I just felt I couldn't get my footing.

"I still believe my best tennis is ahead, I do believe that, but there's a bit more of a challenge now to it, because it's not like it's for sure that's gonna happen.
