Mayor Shammas Malik announced Akron police would be changing their chase policy during his first state of the city address on Wednesday night.

“It’s where society wants us to be and frankly it’s where we wanna be,” said Captain Chris Brewer with Akron Police. “We wanna keep our officers and citizens safe and this is the right change to do that.” “It’s been years since I was in a patrol car, but we’ve all been in that point and when your adrenaline goes up,” Brewer explained. “Your ability to make those fine decisions does go down and we want to be able to make that, so the officers don’t have to think about these things.”
Mayor Shammas Malik delivered the news during his first State of the City address on Wednesday night.
