Akron Public School Board will vote on a budget Monday night that saves $24 million and eliminates 285 jobs.
AKRON, Ohio - The Akron School Board met for more than four hours Monday night. They heard from concerned teachers, parents, and students who all pleaded with them to find another way to make budget cuts. Ultimately the board voted to eliminate 285 positions.
“Not only has this administration denied every single violation to our contract which we have filed, but they question the validity of those grievances while refusing to sit down and try to work towards a solution and have even stated that they do not find the value in mediation,” said Shipe. 19 News reached out to Akron Public Schools. Mark Williamson, the school’s spokesperson sent us the following statement, “We do not engage in this practice. Further, this allegation has not been brought to the district’s attention. That would be the appropriate way to address such concerns. Therefore, we will not respond to assertions based on speculation.”
“We find ourselves confronted with additional financial pressures,” Dr. Robinson said during the meeting. “I am sensitive to the fact that our emotions tonight are very high mine included but I encourage us to pause and recognize that we are working for the common goal of our district.”
