Al Murray opens up about filming his latest Sky History documentary Why Does Everyone Hate The British Empire - and why he's embracing himself for online trolls
Al Murray is back in historian mode for Why Does Everyone Hate The British Empire? – his third Sky documentary series looking at the UK’s patchy past. And he’s bracing himself for online abuse from the patriots and politicians.
The comedian, who is best known for his pub landlord character, dives into the political debate for his Sky History show by visiting Australia, India and other countries previously under British rule and chatting to their inhabitants. “Comedians are always being told we’re supposed to tackle serious subjects and shine a light on truth through humour so here we are!”
While the comic would love to do a show like Who Do You Think You Are? to uncover his family roots, I’m A Celebrity and Celebrity Big Brother are a firm no. “Not in a million years. On I’m A Celeb, you’re hungry and there’s nothing to do – I’d end up being short with people and no one needs to see that,” he says.
