The wellbeing of Alabama’s prisoners is its “top priority,” the Alabama Department of Corrections said in a statement Tuesday.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - It comes one day after the U.S. Department of Justice filed a statement of interest in a lawsuit by some prisoners at St. Clair Correctional Facility who say they’re being subjected to unconstitutional treatment.“Regardless of any pending litigation, the safety and wellbeing of the staff and inmates inside Alabama ’s prison system has always been ADOC ’s top priority.
ADOC firmly believes that the investigation and discovery process over the last 2 years in the cases brought by the Department of Justice and inmates at St. Clair Correctional Facility revealed the extensive and unprecedented efforts by ADOC and its officers to ensure the safety of prison staff and the inmates.
One prison consultant retained by the St. Clair inmates with decades of experience testifying about prison conditions acknowledged that the ADOC never “ignored the conditions at St. Clair” and that ADOC performed “exhaustive work” to hire and retain correctional staff. This is merely one piece of evidence that demonstrates ADOC’s extraordinary work over the last decade.”The ADOC said it would file a formal response to the DOJ’s latest filing later in the month.Copyright 2024 WSFA.
