The Alabama Department of Public Health is now offering free maternal autopsies as an option to families of women who died during pregnancy or up to one year af
ter. The autopsies are free of charge if there's no one to perform the autopsy in the area or a family cannot afford one.The ADPH Maternal Mortality Review Committee reviews eligible cases. The committee is responsible for determining the cause of death, contributing factors, and preventability. The MMRC also provides recommendations to prevent future deaths.
According to the ADPH website, the program officially began in December 2023. Coroners in Baldwin, Jefferson, Madison, Marshall, Mobile, Montgomery, Shelby, and Walker counties participate in the program by recommending it as an option when a death falls out of the coroner's jurisdiction. The autopsies will be conducted at UAB and the University of South Alabama. There are plans to expand the availability of the program statewide in the coming months.
