Committee meetings on legalizing gambling and creating a state lottery are ongoing behind closed doors as the House and Senate negotiate the terms of the bills.

MONTGOMERY , Ala. -

The committee, made up of three senators and three House members, is trying to find middle ground. The two chambers disagree over allowing sports betting and casinos. Rep. Sam Jones, a member on the committee, says they are trying to be fair, but he wouldn’t elaborate on the specifics. Jones did, however, say that the committee plans to meet publicly in the future.

“I had hoped to stand here before you and discuss specifics, but that would be inappropriate considering that negotiations remain ongoing,” Jones said Wednesday. “However, I can report that the conference committee is making substantial progress in addressing the differences between the House and the Senate bills. We remain positive and hopeful that we can reach a agreement that is fair, and that yields the best results for the people of Alabama.

If gaming is legalized, Jones suggests that the money be used to fund public education, affordable health care and infrastructure. While Jones said he wanted to be fair, he also praised the House’s passage of the gaming legislation.
