Ivey recalled that there will be ‘no funny business in Alabama elections,’ making it a felony for citizens to assist those who participate in the voting process.

) - The Alabama NAACP has criticized Governor Kay Ivey for approving SB1. The bill enacts new restrictions on casting absentee ballots and distributing ballots to the public.

Signing this bill into law, likens Alabama to repeat the same racist practices, just as Governor Wallace stood in the schoolhouse door, aiming to prevent people of color from attending the University of Alabama. “Writing ridiculous laws to swing the pendulum in the favor of the elite does not serve the people. In fact, coercion and control is the biggest crime committed by this legislation. What is more astounding is Alabama can find one billion dollars to construct a new prison in Alabama, and now they want to fill these cells by criminalizing citizens for engaging their rights,” said Benard Simelton, president of the Alabama NAACP.
