Yet, ahead of a trip to Knoxville against a conference rival that UA lost to twice already, the team, led by coach Patrick Murphy, appeared calm, smiling and cracking jokes as equipment was loaded into two buses.
UA, a team buoyed by elite pitching all season, feels like it wasn’t favored to advance in its own home bracket. But that changed with an“Free and easy, that’s the way the last two days of practice have been. One day, I pitched from like 35 feet to make it faster,” Murphy said. “Today, moved back to try and move it a little more to mimic the two pitchers. I think everybody is just feeling good. You know, we have no pressure on us. We’re 14, they’re three.
Alabama was outscored 1-7 at home when it welcomed UT nearly a month ago. Beaver was featured against Tennessee’s right-hand dominant lineup, as was Jaala Torrence. Murphy said her curveball could be a neutralizing pitch. “It’s an all-right-handed lineup,” Murphy said. “... Just basically straight up base to base to base. They do hit a lot of home runs. I think that’s the biggest worry for me. We have to keep the ball in the park. We have to make them work for everything.”
