The Leeds keeper made a poor error for Sunderland's equaliser
Sunderland's Alan Browne says he's embarrassed to claim his equaliser against Leeds United, not that it will stop him. The Republic of Ireland midfielder poked fun at Illan Meslier after the Leeds goalkeeper had a calamitous error in letting the ball bounce between his legs in the dying seconds of injury time to deny the Whites a victory that would have taken them joint top of the table.
Browne's cross, of sorts, bounced in front of the Leeds goalkeeper, who looked dumfounded as it went through his hands and into the back of the net. Browne had no problems celebrating the goal but speaking to Sky Sports after the game, he admitted he was feeling a touch embarrassed, even if he had no issues with a slight dig at Meslier in jest.
"I thought the boys would be fuming at me and then the keeper chucked it in the net, so fair play to him. I'm also embarrassed but I'll still claim it," said Browne. "Whether we deserved it or not I am not sure. They really came at us after we scored, we almost invited the pressure on and it played into their hands. We didn't really open them up, but luckily I came up with the goods."
The result lifts Leeds up to third in the table but they could find themselves out of the play-off positions by the end of the weekend with a two week break now before returning from the international break with a game against Sheffield United.
