'I’m now back to being plain old Alan Cumming again,' the Traitors US host said.
The Scottish actor received the honour from the Queen in 2009 for his services to film, theatre and the arts, and activism for LGBTQ+ rights.on Friday, Alan explained he had “misgivings” at “being associated with the toxicity of empire” and had now handed back the award.
After quoting his statement he made at the time, Alan went on to say: “The Queen’s death and the ensuing conversations about the role of monarchy and especially the way the British Empire profited at the expense of indigenous peoples across the world really opened my eyes.
He chose to do so as he did not want to be a “hypocrite” when he aired his views about the monarchy in a Raymond Williams lecture. Michael said that while researching the history of his native Wales and its relationship with the British state, he realised he could not both deliver his lecture and hold on to the OBE.
