The Qantas CEO has defended his pilots, saying customers should be 'worried about the airlines that don't do the turn backs, not the airlines that do', following eight flights being turned back to their departure destination in January.

seven other aircraft fail to reach their destinationMr Joyce insisted the turnbacks are “really rare” and encouraged his pilots to land their aircraft if there are safety concerns.

“An aircraft has up to 4 million moving parts, redundant systems, but when something goes wrong, the pilot will often look at it as the best thing to do, to turn back and get the issue fixed,” he told the Today show on Friday.“We have the best pilots in the world. They are doing a fantastic job.” Mr Joyce said while Qantas suffered eight turnbacks its competitor, Virgin Airlines’ 737 fleet also experienced the same amount.“But I would say there is nothing wrong with air turnbacks. They are a part of the air safety system. They’re inconvenient to our customers and I apologise for that, I wish for customers there weren’t any.”

“You should be worried about the airlines that don't do the turnbacks, not the airlines that do,” he said.
