Former Premier League star Alan Shearer criticizes the length of VAR reviews, claiming they contributed to Jack Grealish's injury in Manchester City's Champions League victory over Real Madrid. Shearer highlights the negative impact of prolonged stoppages on athletic performance and injury risk.
Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer criticized the VAR stoppage for Erling Haaland's opening goal against Real Madrid , arguing that it contributed to Jack Grealish 's subsequent injury. Haaland finally scored against the European champions in his fifth attempt, putting Manchester City 1-0 ahead in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie. He combined brilliantly with Josko Gvardiol before beating Thibaut Courtois in the 19th minute.
The video assistant referee took nearly four minutes to review the goal for offside before awarding it. Less than 10 minutes later, Grealish limped off the pitch, unable to continue. The forward, chosen by Pep Guardiola for his attacking prowess on the left wing, lasted only 30 minutes. Grealish played a crucial role in City's opening goal, chipping the ball over to Gvardiol, who set up Haaland for the finish. During the VAR check, Shearer highlighted the time players spend standing and waiting during a review. He stated: 'It's not acceptable, by the way, you've got finely-tuned athletes who are hanging around and standing still for three-and-a-half minutes now. No wonder there's so many injuries in the game.' When Grealish was forced off shortly after, Shearer added: “He played a huge part in the goal. It certainly doesn’t help when you’ve got elite athletes that are standing around for almost four minutes, it cannot help you or your body. 'It’s not acceptable that players are having to wait around that long.' Manchester City concluded the 2023/24 season with a fourth consecutive Premier League title, but they fell short of another Treble with losses in the FA Cup final and Champions League quarter-finals. Now, Pep Guardiola and his team turn their attention to the transfer window.
