Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer believes Erling Haaland will leave Manchester City before the end of his nine-and-a-half-year contract, despite the Norwegian superstar's recent commitment to the club.
Alan Shearer is convinced Erling Haaland won't fulfill the entirety of his nine-and-a-half-year contract at Manchester City, asserting there's 'no chance' he'll remain at the club until he's 34. The football world was stunned last week when Haaland signed a remarkable nine-and-a-half-year extension with City, keeping him at the club until 2034.
Despite being only 24 now and his contract set to run until he's 34, Newcastle United legend Shearer is certain the Norwegian star will depart before his deal expires. Currently in his third season with the reigning Premier League champions, speculation about Haaland's long-term future – particularly a switch to Real Madrid – has been swirling since his days at Borussia Dortmund. Even faced with Haaland's substantial new deal lacking an active release clause until 2029 (believed to be valued at £250m), Shearer views a transfer away as still possible at some stage. On The Rest is Football podcast, alongside co-hosts Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, the Premier League's all-time leading scorer – whose record Haaland is on course to challenge – voiced his perspectives on the forward's tenure at City. 'By the way, there's absolutely no chance he's staying at Man City for nine-and-a-half years,' stated Shearer. 'Oh, seriously, do you think? I mean, do you think he will?'Richards suggested Madrid as a potential next step but pointed out that with stars like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo, the La Liga champions might not be desperately in need of Haaland, reports the Mirror. Shearer then commented: 'But nine-and-a-half years, he's going to be 34 years of age. I don't see him being there, I'm not saying that he won't break the record. I'm pretty sure he will and he'll probably do it in five or six years. But he's not going to be there nine-and-a-half years. 'I think for both him and Man City, more financially beneficial , he gets more money and for City, they get to protect their asset because if his contract's obviously not going to run out and whoever if they wanted to buy him in however many years, they'd have to pay a s*** load of money for him. 'So it it works for both of them, but I don't see him being there in nine-and-half years. In reality, (Mo) Salah could have the record or (Harry) Kane could have the record before he gets that record himself. Haaland's recent contract extension follows just two months after City boss Pep Guardiola secured his own two-year deal. Guardiola told The Independent that recruiting forwards will become a challenge due to Haaland's dominant position on the squad. 'The bigger strikers will not come to be a replacement for Erling, so we have to find them young to accept the role,' Guardiola revealed. 'Or they're different players like Oscar , McAtee, Phil , and maybe without Erling we'll play a different way, with a 'false' nine, with alternatives, with more runners from outside, more runners for the channels inside. We will find solutions. 'We could not go to sign Mbappe, for example, as a top-class player because normally we play with just one striker. But of course, we have alternatives just in case Erling cannot play all the minutes. We have other options.' However, despite Guardiola's assertion, City are moving closer to securing a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt's Omar Marmoush, valued at £68million. His potential arrival follows the captures of Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis in January. Sign up to our City newsletter so you never miss an update from the Etihad Stadium this season
