The Alaska Black Caucus held a mayoral candidate forum on Sunday ahead of the upcoming runoff election in May which focused on ways to support and strengthen black, indigenous and other people of color in the community.
ABC President Celeste Hodge Growden asked Mayor Dave Bronson and former Assembly Chair Suzanne LaFrance questions about the candidates’ policies and initiatives on diversity, equity and justice. She asked aboutwho was appointed by Bronson earlier this month and will become the first woman to ever hold the position. The candidates were also asked about their plans for the Chief Equity Officer and Rural Affairs Coordinator positions in the municipality.
The candidates were asked, before the forum started, their reaction to this weekend’s violent crimes in Anchorage as well as their views on public safety and crime in general. “Most of those crimes were in a challenged community, by in large our homeless community, as sad as that is,” Bronson said. “A lot of the problems, as you know, comes from substance abuse. People who are suffering from substance abuse need supervision. To get supervision they need to be in a place, we think they should be in a Navigation facility, a shelter, where they can be supervised.”
“Public safety is the most important job of our municipal government and people tell me all the time they just don’t feel safe and right now,” LaFrance said. “APD is in the middle of a staffing crisis. We are down over 50 sworn officers and then another 30 or so non sworn support staff. The numbers may be higher and you know that’s a real problem.”Copyright 2024 KTUU. All rights reserved.
