Alaska commemorates victims by observing National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, hoping to provide them with a safe place.

National Crime Victims’ Rights Week has been made official by The Alaska House Majority as a result of passing House Concurrent Resolution 16 .FAIRBANKS, Alaska - National Crime Victims’ Rights Week has been made official by The Alaska House Majority as a result of passing House Concurrent Resolution 16 . This commemoration week will be observed on April 21 to April 27, 2024, reaffirming Alaska ’s commitment to keep victims’ rights safe.

Established in 1981, NCVRW stands for solidarity and encourages people to remove barriers in hopes of achieving justice for all victims of a crime. The US Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime, decided on the theme for 2024, being “How would you help? Options, services, and hope for crime survivors”. This year’s theme hopes to provide a safe space for victims to share their experiences and to garner support and life-saving services.

“We are grateful for the progress made in safeguarding victims’ rights in Alaska,” said Representative Craig Johnson . “However, we acknowledge the ongoing need to reduce trauma, ensure dignity and respect for victims, and provide avenues for them to regain their sense of security. HCR 16 underscores our commitment to these principles.”

In addition to NCVRW, Alaska honors victims through other events; the STAR Masquerade Ball, the Victims for Justice Ceremony of Remembrance, and the 2024 Victims Service Awards.
