OPINION: Anthony Albanese is doubling down on the Voice, insisting the principles of recognition and consultation are simple and sensible, and that Australians will vote yes in the referendum,

Anthony Albanese is doubling down on his principles-based approach to the Voice referendum while insisting that its establishment can only improve practical outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

But the prime minister sounds determined to resist such demands in favour of sharpening his message about the national importance of voting for the simple principles of recognition and consultation enshrined in the constitution.he has faith that Australians will vote for this “sensible” change despite opponents trying to “stir up a culture war” and “those who want to create confusion and provoke division, to try and stall progress”.

Instead, Albanese is firmly maintaining his line this must be left to federal parliament to determine – and only after a yes vote by the people and then months more of consultation with Indigenous groups, rather than more clearly defining the proposed structure and scope of the Voice ahead of time. Being blamed for that could be devastating for Dutton’s image – even though Albanese would be badly damaged too.

A constitutionally enshrined Voice to parliament, he argues, provides the best chance to ensure permanent respect for Indigenous views after decades of failed policies to tackle their disadvantage. That’s even though Albanese says these, mostly, have been imposed with the best of intentions backed by considerable resources.
