A pro-Palestine rally outside Sydney’s Opera House on Monday has been widely labelled as a display of anti-Semitism by Australian politicians with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese making no admission about it having prejudicial overtones.
The protest saw Palestinian supporters congregate on the streets of the city in support of the unprecedented attacks launched by militant group Hamas in southern Israel over the weekend.
Allegra Spender, Independent MP for Wentworth which includes a large Jewish community, spoke of the “appalling” events of the protest and criticised the government for its ineffective handling of the situation. “Obviously in this country we have a right to free speech, but I do not support the hate speech, the anti-Semitism that happened last night and the Jewish community should have been able to stand at the foot of the Opera House and look at the colours of the Opera House lit up because so many of them have friends and family in Israel right now who are under attack.
“There has been a rise in anti-Semitism in recent times, in Australia. I have been shocked by some of it,” he said. “We need to make sure that racism has no place in Australia. We are a tolerant, multicultural nation who have been enriched by our diversity.” “We have offered political solidarity; our continued support and we are reaching out and engaging with other parties in the region.”
