Legazpi City: The provincial government of Albay will enforce the evacuation of residents living inside the six-kilometer permanent danger zone after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert status of the restive volcano from level 2 to level 3 on Thursday, June 8.
This was announced by Cedric Daep, chief of Albay Public Safety Emergency Management Office , after Phivolcs raised the alert status of Mayon Volcano to level 3 at noon.Camalig town Mayor Carlos Baldo also ordered the suspension of classes in Tumpa, Quirangay and Cabangan Elementary schools at 1 p.m.Alert level 3 means there is an increased tendency towards a hazardous eruption, the Phivolcs said.
In contrast, SO2 emission remains at baseline or background levels.Short-term ground deformation data from continuous GPS, electronic tilt, and EDM monitoring indicate persistent inflation of the southeastern middle and upper slopes since February 2023. The overall monitoring parameters indicate that very slow extrusion of shallow degassed magma is ongoing and is incrementally increasing in rate, that is, effusive magmatic eruption is taking place.
