Explore the history and significance of 'Albertopolis', the nickname for South Kensington's cultural hub in London, dedicated to Prince Albert's legacy and Victorian achievements.
There are many famous buildings all over the country that have their own strange nicknames - but some of the most interesting are in London . You need only think of how Buckingham Palace is known as 'Buck House' or how The Fenchurch Building is better known as 'The Walkie-Talkie' to realise how many there are. While many locals will have personal abbreviations for their home or work boroughs, there aren't too many famous ones that are known by everyone.
But if there is one funny nickname that everyone should know it is certainly 'Albertopolis' in South Kensington - owing to the huge number of links to Queen Victoria's consort, Prince Albert. The Albertopolis area of London is located in South Kensington and encompasses several hugely important buildings and monuments such as The Royal Albert Hall, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Natural History Museum, The Science Museum and The Albert Memorial. The site centres on Exhibition Road and has fondly become known as 'Albertopolis' as it was an area that was designed to celebrate the achievements and grandeur of Victorian Britain. The area was purchased by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 following the huge success of Prince Albert's Great Exhibition which was held in Hyde Park. The term was first coined in the 1850s to satirise the role of Prince Albert as he worked to develop the cultural achievements of many famous scientists, inventors and mathematicians. It fell into disuse when the prince died from typhoid in 1861 but was recirculated 100 years later by architectural historians. While the likes of The VandA and The Albert Memorial are the most famous draws to the area, other hugely famous buildings include the Royal Geographical Society, the Royal College of Music and Imperial College London. In the years that have passed since his death, Prince Albert has been praised for his progressive work and liberal ideas, as well as for the support he threw behind modern inventions and reform
