Supermarket giant Aldi has walked back claims the German chain has plans to offer online shopping in Australia.
Aldi customer interactions director Adrian Christie spoke at a parliamentary inquiry into promoting economic dynamism on Monday and discussed the supermarket's eCommerce future, leading to speculation about a move to online shopping.an Aldi spokesperson confirmed they would not be entering the online shopping market anytime soon.
"One of the major ways we are able to offer the highest quality groceries at the lowest prices is our streamlined business model that is focused on simplicity."However, the spokesperson said Aldi would continue to monitor the online space. "We won't bring this forward until we have a model where associated overheads of eCommerce in no way compromises our ability to deliver low-priced groceries to Australians."
Corporate affairs representative Adrian Christie said on Monday the supermarket would need to enter into the online shopping space to keep a sustainable business model to compete with Coles and Woolworths. "You will see us entering that space in the future," he said when questioned about online shopping and competition bewteen the major supermarkets.Aldi is Australia's third largest supermarket, with just under 10 per cent of the market share according to Statista data from 2023.
