Goalkeeper Alex Cairns has returned to Leeds United after nine years away from Elland Road, joining the Championship club for a nominal fee from Salford City
New arrival Alex Cairns has promised to get "stuck in" after re-signing for Leeds United on a two-year deal. Doncaster-born Cairns has joined the Whites for a nominal six-figure fee from League Two outfit Salford City, becoming their second summer signing.
After a period on loan at Salford City in the 2022/23 campaign, Cairns joined the club on a permanent basis. He made 51 appearances for the Ammies last term, starting every League Two match as City flirted with relegation.With Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow still on United's books, the 31-year-old is expected to the fill the third-choice goalkeeper spot vacated by Kristoffer Klaesson.
The experienced shot-stopper also paid tribute to his former club Salford, saying: "Just want to say a big thank you to everyone associated with @SalfordCityFC. You took me in and I’ve loved every minute of the journey. Some really good people within the football club. I wish you all nothing but success in the future and will always be watching on."
