Manchester City and England footballer Alex Greenwood has suffered a knee injury during a Champions League match and is facing a lengthy recovery period. She took to Instagram to share the news with fans, expressing her determination to return to the pitch soon. The footballer also received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow players.
Alex Greenwood has shared a career update with fans after suffering a knee injury in Manchester City's Champions League game against Austrian side St Pölten. The 31-year-old shared a photo from hospital with Instagram followers on Friday, December 20. She said 'not the ending to 2024 that I had planned. I will work so hard to be back on the pitch as soon as I can, for now I’m going to take some time to myself & family who always give their time to me.
Thankyou for all the support this year, see you all soon.' Fans and other WSL (Women's Super League) players took to the comments to support the England international. Fellow Manchester City player Alanna Kennedy commented 'Love you sis' and Canadian international Janine Beckie added 'So proud of you'. Fans sent supportive messages including 'With you every step of the way' and 'Wishing you all the best, you will come back better and stronger than ever we are all behind you skipper.' After a triumphant Euro 2022 win, Greenwood was immortalised with a mural in the heart of her home town . She said she was 'honoured' to have the 22ft mural commemorating her sporting successes painted onto the front of 320 Stanley Road. The footballer came off the bench in the second half when the Lionesses beat Germany 2-1. Alex, a former pupil at Savio Salesian high school, said: “I would like to thank Sefton Council for this mural. It’s really important for me to be able to send a message to young girls in my area that anything is possible. Many of the dreams I had while walking the streets of Bootle and playing on the pitches have come true through hard work and perseverance. Characteristics that were formed in Bootle.” Liverpool artist John Culshaw, who is known for murals of Ringo Starr in Toxteth and Mo Salah in Anfield , was tasked with creating the mural, funded due to a joint venture by Sefton Council and REPT Sports
