Channa Kelly watched on as her daughter Alexandra danced around her bedroom, talking with her new Barbie dolls. As Alex twirled around the room, she kicked the deflating balloons that had been hung the weekend prior at her seventh birthday party. Laughing at her cheeky girl, Channa left the bedroom to have a nap before dinner. When she woke, she discovered her daughter motionless on the floor of her bedroom with a large number seven rainbow balloon wrapped around her entire head.
Birthday celebrations continued into the week and by October 1, the balloons had started to deflate. Channa remembers that day as just a “lazy Sunday”. Alex was still revelling in her birthday love as she played in her bedroom with her new toys. The now seven-year-old turned to her mum and asked if she could pop the balloons drifting along the ground. “The 10-12 latex balloons were no longer floating and were on the ground,” Channa says.
