Former England and Arsenal defender Alex Scott believes that women's football is becoming less accessible for players from diverse backgrounds. She highlights the challenges faced by inner-city girls due to the proliferation of academies located outside urban areas. Scott calls for the Football Association to address this issue and ensure equal opportunities for all aspiring female footballers.
Alex Scott , the former Arsenal and England defender, believes that women from diverse backgrounds face fewer opportunities in women's football today compared to when she started her career. Scott, who grew up on a council estate and began playing for Arsenal at the age of eight, credits her success to a youth worker who recognized her talent and facilitated her transportation to training.
She acknowledges that the current landscape, with numerous academies located outside urban areas, presents a significant obstacle for inner-city girls. \Scott emphasizes that football should be inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. She fears that the shift towards suburban academies has inadvertently created barriers for players from less privileged communities. She calls on the Football Association (FA) to address this disparity and ensure equal opportunities for all aspiring female footballers. \The FA conducted a review between 2020 and 2023 to examine the structure of women's football and identify ways to create a pathway to professional play for players from all backgrounds. One of their stated goals is to guarantee equal access to the game for both women and girls. Scott's concerns about diversity within the sport extend beyond the grassroots level. She has highlighted the lack of black, Asian, and ethnic minority players in both club and international teams. This issue was also explored in her 2022 BBC documentary, where she called for concrete action to address the underrepresentation of diverse talent. \Scott retired from playing in 2018 and has since transitioned to a successful broadcasting career. She has covered both men's and women's World Cups for the BBC, became the first woman to present Football Focus, and regularly hosts BBC Sport's Women's Super League coverage. She finds pride in her ability to inspire young girls through her various platforms, believing that her visibility helps create a sense of belonging and possibility for aspiring footballers from all walks of life
