Former heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin faces a 10-year erasure of his boxing record due to a positive test for Ostarine in 2014.
Former heavyweight world title challenger Alexander Povetkin is facing a significant blow to his boxing legacy after a doping investigation uncovered previously unreported positive tests for the banned substance Ostarine . The 45-year-old Russian, who retired from professional boxing in 2021, initially tested positive for Ostarine in 2016, leading to a one-year suspension.
However, the International Testing Agency (ITA) recently revealed that Povetkin had also tested positive for Ostarine in 2014. This revelation has resulted in a four-year 'period of ineligibility' for Povetkin, and a decade's worth of his wins, along with those of his opponents, will be expunged from the official record.A statement from the ITA confirmed that Povetkin chose not to contest the anti-doping violation. The statement further specified that all of Povetkin's results from October 25, 2014, to the start of his provisional suspension on October 21, 2024, have been disqualified. This includes the results of a boxing match held on the night of October 24/25, 2014, during which Povetkin held the WBC 'interim' title. A victory in that match would have secured him an immediate shot at the then-champion. The loss, however, delayed the highly anticipated all-British showdown between Povetkin and fellow contender, Dillian Whyte. Whyte ultimately got his revenge in their rematch, finishing Povetkin in the fifth round, paving the way for his long-awaited clash with Tyson Fury. This doping scandal casts a shadow over some of Povetkin's most notable achievements, including his Olympic gold medal at the Athens 2004 Games and his reign as the WBA 'regular' heavyweight champion from 2011 to 2013. His professional record currently stands at 36-3-1, but it will be significantly altered in the coming months. The ITA findings undoubtedly tarnish his legacy and serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against doping in professional sports
