Alexandra Burke stars with Sarah Parish in the gritty new thriller series Curfew, where men are bound by tough restrictions, and she reveals that the role is 'a massive dream'

Imagine a Britain where men are subjected to a nightly curfew and have to wear ankle tags to track their movements to keep women and girls safe. That’s the premise of new TV drama Curfew. The series stars Stay Close actress Sarah Parish as a police detective who realises the controversial system isn’t working when a woman is found murdered and singer Alexandra Burke plays a teacher who becomes part of the investigation.

Alexandra agrees. “It’s edgy. When I got given the scenes for my audition, there wasn’t a lot of information about my character, Helen. Then when I started reading them, I thought, my gosh, this is deep. When I spoke to my partner and my brother about it, it caused a massive debate. So straight away, I thought, ‘This is brilliant.’”

“If the 15-year-old me could see me here…” she says proudly. “My mum said, ‘Forget about acting, it will come. Forget about dancing, it will come. You concentrate on singing.’ I would never have believed her. I’m so happy to be part of this concept.” “When I get scripts, I always read the woman’s part and go, ‘OK, that’s good.’ I’ll read the man’s part and go, ‘I really want to play that part,’” she explains. “I always want to play the man’s part because, for some reason, people find it easier to write multifaceted men who are fallible. Men can be wicked and good, funny and sad. Whereas a woman has maybe three traits, and if they do something wrong, they’re redeemed by the end.
