Randwick City Council has issued a warning to avoid swimming at some of Sydney’s most famous beaches due to a brown algae bloom.

Randwick City Council has shared photos of the thick brown slick blanketing the water at Sydney’s picturesque Coogee beach, while the algae has also turned the crystal clear waters of South Maroubra brown.

“You might get a section of algae then 100 metres up the beach its clear. The advice we’re giving swimmers is if they see discolouration in the water to avoid swimming there,” the spokesperson said.
