Could aliens be ‘hopping’ across the universe using binary black holes to blast their spacecraft close to the speed of light – allowing them to travel ‘invisibly’?
It sounds like something from the more bonkers end of sci fi – but an astronomer reckons the ‘Halo Drive’ could be one of the reasons we’ve never spotted aliens. And it’s possible aliens are already using to stealth around our own Milky Way galaxy, the Columbia University academic reckons.It would work using ‘gravitational mirrors’ – where photons whoosh back out of a pair of black holes with more energy than they went in.
It could potentially allow aliens to fire a laser into a binary black hole, and then use the resulting ‘boomerang’ blast to boost a spaceship to near light speed. The key advantage for the little green men is that they wouldn’t need to carry fuel – and because there’s no ‘engine’, we might not be able to spot them,
