More than 40 whales have died following a ‘mass stranding’ on a Scottish beach. Police have told people to stay away from the beach to give the whales the best chance of survival.

‘Pilot whales are notorious for their strong social bonds, so often when one whale gets into difficulty and strands, the rest follow.Only 10 of the animals are said to still be alive

‘Considering how long the pilot whales had been out of the water in addition to the poor conditions, it was decided that they should be euthanised on welfare grounds. ‘Our team in the Western Isles are desperately short of response equipment now, and we are appealing for any help with donations that can go directly towards supporting them by visiting our Justgiving page here:‘We will not be reporting the location of the mass stranding until the situation is resolved.
