James Herriot is back from war and delivering cows in Darrowby - all is right on Channel 5's pastural, soothing drama
James Herriot is back from war and delivering cows in Darrowby - all is right on Channel 5's pastural, soothing dramaBy“Comfort TV”, “balm for the soul” and “like an old pair of slippers” are the sort of comments usually directed at. Channel 5 couldn’t have engineered a better time to launch their James Herriot reboot than during the Covid lockdown in 2020 when a balm for the soul was much in demand.
But hold on, wasn’t James supposed to be piloting RAF bombers? It transpired that he had contracted brucellosis from an infected animal and was now deemed unfit to fly. Detailed instead to dig ditches for an ungrateful farmer, he managed to persuade his commanding officer to be discharged and return to veterinary duties in Yorkshire.
There was also a rumpus over Mrs Hall’s desire to do her bit for the war effort and become an air-raid warden, though self-important commander Mr Bosworth was reluctant to “send out females alone in the middle of the night”. Mrs Hall and Mrs Pumphrey finally managed to persuade him that former Wren Mrs Hall was more than up to the job.
Once James has saved his newborn calf, the pair share a comradely shoulder slap. Even Mrs Pumphrey seems to have dismounted her high horse, while the perma-irascible Siegfried now coos over baby Jimmy at every available opportunity. This could all have become cloying, but somehow wasn’t. Such universal good-heartedness may be unrealistic, but it’s a welcome relief in these politically and socially fractured times.
