NI will also be much better connected to the Republic with faster, more frequent trains through new areas

The final All-Island Rail Review contains 30 recommendations to return trains to some long neglected parts of the island, improve the frequency of services and increase rail speeds between cities. It was branded “the most ambitious vision for rail in a century” by Ireland’s Transport Minister Eamon Ryan ahead of its joint publication with NI’s Infrastructure Minister, John O’Dowd.

Restoration of a former line linking Portadown with Mullingar through Armagh and Cavan is also included alongside relinking Derry and Portadown with stops in Strabane, Omagh and Dungannon. The consultancy, carried out by Arup, could see intercity trains reach speeds of 200km/h in a bid to make rail travel faster than taking the car.

“Rail not only allows us to carry more people and freight in a more sustainable way, it is the great connector, enabling greater regional accessibility and balanced regional development. DfI minister in the North, John O’Dowd, added that the review has been “an excellent example of joint collaboration on cross-border priorities”.
