There are several changes that could be made for motorists by the Chancellor
As she looks to fill a supposed £22bn black hole in public finances, households are bracing themselves for potential tax rises.Under such a system, motorists would pay every time they drive, with some warning that it would have a negative effect on the working class and those who live in rural areas. It is seen as an alternative to road tax.
Currently, there is no tax to pay on electric cars. However, from April next year, drivers of electric and low emission vehicles will need to pay vehicle tax in the same way as drivers of petrol and diesel vehicles. Simon Williams, RAC’s head of policy, said: “We’ve reached the conclusion the Chancellor has no option but to put fuel duty back up to 58p a litre in October’s Budget.
