There are a number of new car laws coming into force which could affect drivers in the UK this month.

A raft of new HMRC regulations affecting petrol and diesel car owners are being implemented today, impacting everything from vehicle charging to car production. These rates can be utilised by employers to reimburse company car drivers for business fuel. They can also be used if employees need to repay the cost of fuel used for private travel.

AFRs for diesel company cars have all decreased. The rate for a diesel company car with an engine size of more than 2,000cc is cut from 18-17ppm, while the new AFR for a diesel vehicle with an engine from 1,601-2,000cc falls from 14-13ppm, reports the Mirror. Additionally, charge point operators may face fines of up to £10,000 per charger if they fail to meet new standards that came into effect in November, requiring contactless payment options on all electric vehicle charging points with a power output of 8kW and above, as well as existing chargers of 50kW and beyond.

Mr Hall has raised concerns about the financial risks highlighted by ESP Group, stating: "Across the country, the potential financial exposure for the industry is substantial, especially for larger operators with hundreds of charge points to manage," and emphasizing that non-compliance with new standards among the over 68,000 public charge points in the UK could result in hefty fines.
