All the moral ambiguity and intricacies of Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer-winning novel are lost in this translation to screen
In a dimly lit attic room, blind Marie-Laure is broadcasting messages of hope from her radio in the German occupied city. Her words reach the ears of Werner Pfennig , a young Nazi solider, who decides he will do anything to save her from detection by his forces. At the same time, in Essen, Germany, an orphaned Werner Pfennig is also listening to the Professor. Years pass, war breaks out; Paris is occupied and soon, Marie and her diamond are being sought by the Nazi officer Reinhold von Rumple . Can Werner keep Marie safe?‘ Shawn Levy, this take on Doerr’s epic novel has been given the big budget treatment, and it looks both wonderful and very obviously expensive: with its starry cast and vast, wildly elaborate sets, this is blockbuster TV.
The Nazis, meanwhile, are bad – in both senses of the word. They either speak… very… quietly… and… menacingly… OR-VERY-FAST-AND-LOUD.
